Federal BOP Release Records

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is the federal criminal custody source. The research did not identify a BOP prison located in Marshall County, but BOP is still relevant when a Marshall County resident, arrestee, or case participant was sentenced federally. A federal release is separate from a Marshall County Jail release unless the person also had a county booking that ended through the sheriff system.

BOP says its inmate locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. It also warns that release dates may change because sentences are reviewed and recalculated, including sentence-credit changes. The important release-confirmation rule is on BOP's record information page: if the listed date is in the past and no facility location is shown, BOP says the release occurred and the person is no longer in BOP custody.

Confirm a BOP Release

A BOP release lookup begins with the federal locator, then branches based on the result. A current facility location means the person is still in BOP custody. A past release date with no facility location means BOP states the release occurred and the person is no longer in BOP custody. A missing result requires careful identity checks and may require a federal court source or records route.

1. Open the BOP inmate locator and search by BOP register number if known.
2. If no number is known, search by name and compare age and identity details before relying on a match.
3. Read any facility location, projected release date, or past release date shown by BOP.
4. Use BOP's about federal inmate records page to interpret a past release date and no location.
5. Check the sheriff released roster only if a separate Marshall County Jail booking was part of the custody path.
6. Use the federal court docket route when the question is sentence, judgment, or case disposition rather than custody location.

Reading BOP Release Dates

BOP's record explanation is unusually clear for past releases. If the listed date is in the past and there is no facility location, BOP explains that the inmate was released on that date and is no longer in BOP custody. That interpretation is narrower than many readers expect. It confirms the end of BOP custody, not whether the person is under federal supervision, in local custody, in state custody, or in immigration custody.

Use that explanation when a BOP result shows a past release date. Then check any known court, county, state, or immigration source if another custody path may exist.

Marshall County Federal Overlap

A Marshall County jail release can involve a federal hold, warrant, writ, or transfer, but no Marshall-specific USMS public booking feed was identified in the research. If a person was held locally for a federal court event, the sheriff release date may show a transfer out of county custody. The federal custody path then depends on the U.S. District Court record, the U.S. Marshals route, and BOP if the person enters BOP custody.

For a local booking, start with the sheriff released roster and the jail records custodian. For a federal sentence, start with BOP. For the court result, use the federal docket route. Mixing those sources can create bad conclusions. A person can be released by the county to federal custody, released by BOP to supervision, or never enter BOP at all.

If the federal case later intersects with immigration custody, the next search is ICE ODLS, not BOP. If the case returns to an Alabama sentence, ADOC or the Marshall County court record may become relevant again. Preserve any register number or case number, because federal name-only searches can match more than one person.

BOP vs County Release

Federal and county systems use different records. The same name can appear in both systems if the person had local and federal events, but one system does not replace the other. Search each custodian for the event it controls.
